How about those Socceroos!

I was awoken from my slumber this morning to the news that the Socceroos were going through to the second round. I went all fuzzy, and it is the first time I have felt like supporting Australia. Sporting events usually sees me supporting any team but Australia, so I think maybe my tastes are changing.

I watched the Australia / Brazil game and after some confusion (I found myself cheering for Brazil thinking they were Australia) was midly surprised at how well Australia held its own. At the start of the second half of that game I actually found myself thinking that Australia could actually win! Alas, it didn't happen with a couple of lucky goals, one by "Fred" who appeared from nowhere.

As I dawdled into work this morning, there were splashes of green and yellow through the city and the occasional Australian flag worn as a cap. As I stopped to briefly watch the Japan / Brazil game being screened in Rundle Mall I actually thought "wouldn't it be funny if Australia won the World Cup". Not such an offbeat idea, look at all the underdogs in 2002 who caused a minor upset.

Can the Socceroos battle through and win the world cup? I am going to be overly optimistic and say Yes. As we know anything is possible, and we have seen enough movies where the underdog takes everyone by surprise.

I've experienced being an underdog in a sporting event - softball to be precise. I was 14 years old and played in an international schools tourament. Everybody laughed at us because we wore soccer uniforms instead of softball uniforms, and the other teams made the mistake of thinking we were pushovers. We ended up coming third (I still have the medal!) and those teams that lost were stunned and protesting"but they wore soccer uniforms".

Go you socceroos, I have faith but if you don't win this year there is always 2010!
