If this decision was equal opportunities based I would be deservedly livid. Women do not need to pass the same physical standards as men in the defence force so wtf should they demand entry to combat roles.
However the official line from the defence force is a "desperate times" attitude in that falling recruitment levels are requring them to source different avenues to keep the levels up.
I could see why as many women go into 'Sigs' (Signal Corps) as the equivalent of Infantry: Sigs is the 'I dunno' Corp for ladies who wish to join the defence force but don't have a specific Corp in mind.
(Had I known that back when I was in the Res I would have joined Sigs!)
BUT in any platoon on operations they really only need one radio. Three (one for each section) at most.
Now anyone who's done basic training would know how to use a radio, so the necessisty of taking a Sigs soldier or 3 with you on operations is dubious. Really Signals soldiers are only needed for running Comms bases, and a profficient soldier could run a base able to lend support to an entire company. I don't really need to keep going to show you that having a lot of your female recruits going to something as low-use as Sigs Corp is a bit of a waste.
BUT REALLLLLLY this all could have been avoided by changing the rules on female physical requirements for combat corps. Those women wishing to join combat corps would then have to pass the same bloody standards as men.
And if they could do that, then of course they would have as much right to be in the combat corps as men.
All this goes to show if Chuckles is going to be political she should really have a forum instead of a blog. :P And that JK should be in charge of the Universe.
